The kick-off event on May 9 and 10, 2023 in Frankfurt marked the beginning of the collaboration between numerous experts from science and industry for sustainable groundwater management. The first working meeting of the "NitratLurch" project group also took place here the day before. The aim of the "NitratLurch" research project is to stimulate microbial denitrification in the inflow of drinking water wells by injecting reduced gaseous substrates. The process studies on the degradation of nitrate are being investigated in a scaled approach.
After a three-month planning phase, work began in early August at the TUM research institute in Obernach to fill the concrete channel, which measures 2.50 m wide, 1.80 m high and 6 m long, in a water-saturated state and to install the necessary measurement and sensor technology (Fig. 1). After a planned lead time of several weeks, which serves to set stationary hydraulic conditions, the first experiments on hydraulics and preliminary tests on gas injection are started. We would like to thank all project partners involved for their active support in setting up the flume.
